Barrie Pipes and Drums Beginner Teaching Program

Barrie Pipes and Drums will provide free lessons to beginners interested in learning to play the Great Highland Bagpipe, Pipe Band Snare Drum, Tenor Drum or Bass Drum.

Lesson Format

  • Lessons will typically occur on a weekly basis as part of the band’s weekly (Wednesday evening) rehearsal and practice activity.    The location will usually be the ANAF Club at 52 Morrow Rd, Barrie.

  • Lessons may be in a group format or 1-1. This is dependent on instructor availability and the number of students in our program.

  • You will be taught by a band member or leader who is experienced in both playing the instrument and teaching.

  • The student is responsible for purchasing the materials to allow the student to take the lessons.

  • The lessons will continue for a period of time to allow the student to progress far enough to playing the actual instrument.

  • There is no cost for lessons for beginners in the above described format.

  • At some point the student may want to engage in 1-1 lessons with a qualified teacher to reach an intermediate or advanced level.

  • Snare drummers need Pipe Band Style Drums sticks (not Kit Drum sticks or Marching Band Drum Sticks)

  • Practice Pad (Snare drummer)

  • Tenor Drumming or Bass Drum Mallets

  • Tutor Books TBD
